The lost art of painting the sea

For two centuries the open sea was the subject serious painters measured themselves against: weather, weight, and the small human thing being thrown around in it. That is the sea Vaelmar paints, in the manner of the old masters who took it seriously. Dark, heavy, and with a will of its own.

Each piece is a dark Old-Master oil of the sea, reproduced as a 12-colour archival giclée that holds every brushstroke, the impasto and the deep blacks true on your wall.

Three ways to own it

Fine-art paper +

Heavyweight 200 gsm enhanced matte, acid-free and FSC-certified, printed full-bleed edge to edge with a 12-colour pigment giclée. A fine matte tooth that reads like the oil. The lightest option, frame it your own way.

Gallery canvas +

Gallery canvas, stretched and ready to hang, with the image wrapped around the deep edges. The woven surface reads as a painting, and with no glass, nothing glares across the deep blacks.

Framed canvas +

The gallery canvas set in a slim solid-wood floater frame (black, natural wood, or dark brown), floating behind a clean shadow gap. Ready to hang out of the box, glare-free and gallery-clean.

Questions

How is the artwork made? +

Each piece is a dark Old-Master oil of the sea, reproduced as a museum-grade archival giclée and printed to order on your chosen material. What you receive is a premium fine-art print, ready to frame or hang.

How long does delivery take? +

Your order is usually on its way within a few days and arrives in roughly 5–10 business days, depending on your country. Full shipping details →

Can I return it? +

EU and Norway deliveries require your approved collector inscription, permanently printed into the artwork. For our other enabled destinations the inscription is optional. Vaelmar does not offer voluntary change-of-mind returns. If it arrives damaged, faulty, or different from what you ordered, we put it right at no cost to you. Return terms →

Do framed pieces need glass? +

No, and that’s on purpose. Glass reflects the room and flattens dark tones, so the canvas hangs open in a slim floater frame, ready to hang.
